New Job Openings for Orthodox Jewish Women

Orthodox Jewish Women generally have different considerations to take into account when seeking a career or employment. Many will try to find jobs that are family friendly, allowing them time to care of their children as well as help out with religious holiday preparations. For the longest time these jobs examples would be wig stylist, teachers and more recently speech therapy, OT, PT etc.. A new job market is opening up that could prove to be another opportunity for Jewish Orthodox women: Kosher Supervisor AKA Mashgiach. The article in the JFB reports that women may be better at the job than men are:Rabbi Mayer Kurcfeld of the Star-K, who is organizing the fall training course, oversees several women supervisors and says they are often better than men because they are particular about details."They're very meticulous," he says. "They don't deviate -- either a thing is right or it's not. A guy, a lot of times he'll do a Talmudic analysis. I don't want a Talmudic analysis. A mashgiach's job is to see and to hear and to report."Most female supervisors work in the food services industry and tend to be found in cities outside New York and Los Angeles, where plenty of Orthodox men are available to fill the jobs. As you can see from a book published by Rabbi Zushe Blech on Kosher food production, the idea of a female mashgiach was pretty rare:

As time progresses and more classes are given we may see a change in this industry entirely.

Kosher Meat: Prices to Come Down?

Kosher Meat prices have been steadily on the rise with the recent bankruptcy and controversy surrounding the nation's largest Kosher slaughterhouse, Agriprocessor. It seems Agriprocessor has found a buyer:SHF Industries, a newly formed company owned by Hershey Friedman, a Montreal businessman. Lets hope they can get this company up and running again and bring down the prices on kosher meat everywhere.

Traffic Lawyers,Speeding Tickets DWI/DUI: The Very Best in NY.

This is a public announcement for our NY residents. New York is one of those states that is known for giving out plenty of speeding tickets. Whether it's on the Belt Parkway or Upstate on the NY State Thruway or the Southern State Parkway. NYS needs it's speeding tickets (and parking tickets) to help balance it's budget. You may find yourself needing to defend yourself against such tickets and it's hard to find a lawyer who is excellent at his craft but at the same time charges a reasonable fees. I have found such an attorney and his name is Dennis O' Sullivan. I have used him more than once (unfortunately) and he's come through every time. His website is NYTICKETDEFENSE.COM. Feel free to pass this information along and if you call feel free to tell him where you heard about him. he also deals with tenant and land lord law as well as Real Estate transactions.

Parshas Korach in the News!

We all know the famous story in this weeks parsha regarding the ground swallowing up korach and his men (or just his men). I find it to be a strange coincidence that this week, there is a big story about a person who was swallowed up in the dead sea. Apparently in the dead sea there exist a "sink hole" problem. What is a sink hole you ask? A sink hole is an underground crate that can open up in an instant, sucking in whatever lies above and leaving the surrounding area looking like an earthquake zone. In this particular story: Eli Raz was peering into a narrow hole in the Dead Sea hole when the earth opened up and swallowed him. Fearing he would never be found alive in the 30-foot- deep pit, he scribbled his will on an old postcard. After 14 hours a search party pulled him from the hole unhurt, and five years later the 69-year-old geologist is working to save others from a similar fate, leading an effort to map the sinkholes that are spreading on the banks of the fabled saltwater lake.

Pretty insane! Might make you think twice about taking a dip in the dead sea.

Be Aware: Contaminated Fuel- Sunoco station

A Sunoco gas station in Cedarhurt at 360 Rockaway Turnpike is allegedly selling contaminated fuel. My suggestion is to stay away from this gas station at all costs. Trying to fix your car after could easily cost $1000 to replace your fuel injectors and/or fuel line. You read more about warning signs on contaminated fuel here.

Having 2 Shwekeys? Can there be only one?

As you may have heard Yaakov Shwekey's younger brother, Yosef Chaim has his debut album out and it's generating a lot of buzz. Now comes the question is can they both be big stars or when stars collide...well never mind. I found it interesting that they are both in different corners. Yaakov Shwekey is represented by Yochi Briskman and his album is distributed by Aderet. Yosef Chaim Shwekey is produced by (according to wikpedia but who knows) Moshe Laufer and is disributed by Sameach Music. I heard something a while back about an agreement that Yosef Chaim would not use the famous last name "Shwekey"on his record so people don't mix up the two borthers or something along those lines. Whether true or not, his last name is not on the album so that too is interesting. It wouldn't be a far stretch to imagine that he certainly wants to make a name for his own. There is no question after listening to Yosef Chaim's his sampler he does sound somewhat similiar to his older brother. It should be interesting to see how people will view him i.e. oh we can't afford Yaakov, let's get his brother? Certainly at least in the beginning he will be living in Yaakov's shadow to some degree or another. Yosef Chaim has already built his reputation by singing at Jewish weddings as the video below shows. The sampler does get your apettite wet and it sounds like there is some big potential there. I hope to review the album in more detail down the road.

Here is Yosef Chaim Shwekey performing live at a wedding in Crown Heights:

Latest Bankruptcy: Eddie Bauer

The AP reports: Clothing retailer Eddie Bauer Holdings Inc. filed on Wednesday for Chapter 11 bankruptcy court protection, the latest retail casualty of the recession. They are trying to restructure but are hoping to be sold. They are yet another retailer to fall prey to the economy as other retailers have already buried the hatchet like Linen's and Things, Mervyns, Circuit City and Filene's Basement. They NYT reports: the company blamed much of its debt load to loans it took on when its onetime parent company, Spiegel, filed for bankruptcy in 2003. Eddie Bauer took on $300 million in debt, as well as Spiegel’s benefits and pension plans. The retailer said that about 50 percent of its earnings now go toward paying down that debt. Anyway you wear this ( get it?) it does not look good. You could say this is just a case of survival of the fittest but it certainly makes for a scary outlook on today's economy and just where things might be headed. With the unemployment rate at 9.4% the highest since 1983 it's easy to understand why many are taking a very pessimistic view on their financial future. The joke is: if your friend loses his job it's a recession, when YOU lose your job it's a depression. One can only pray to the almighty that things will turn around.

Thanks to Sruly Meyer the audio preview for the debut album from
Berry Weber,"Bezras Hashem Yisbarach" is here.

If you recall I mentioned this new anticipated album here.

New Jewish Music Release: Free Sampler Mp3

Presenting the first of STEProduction’s albums THERE’S A PLACE IN MY MIND, songs that penetrate the depths of the Neshama, starring Avrumi Flam, who has magnificently pulled together this tremendous production.

Although these songs have been very popular for many years, they were never released to the public before. This new release, sung by Avrumi Flam along with with Yehuda! and Dov Levine, is now available to the entire listening population.

The need for Jewish music with themes that are educational, build character and strengthen yiras shomayim is crucial.

We look forward to sharing over 35 years of songs written by Mrs. Dina Storch with the special engineers who have been part of it and those who are new to it.

Jewish Wedding Music : Part 2

Life-of-Rubin posted a video about how Heshy made a shidduch off his Blog which I think is pretty hilarious. It got me thinking about weddings again and the Jewish wedding music scene. Now I posted previously about some thoughts in relation to the topic and I won't rehash them here again in this post. I did notice however, a new trend regarding the Jewish wedding band or Jewish wedding orchestra if you will. More people now then ever are getting into this line of business. For the longest time Jewish Orchestras were generally comprised of offices with several employees running different aspects of it, from the sales rep to the music planning to booking the musicians etc.. Now more than ever there are many people jumping into this business and they are the Vocalist or music production people. Examples: Shloime Dachs, Yakov Young, Sruly Williger, Michoel Pruzansky and many other singers have moved away from trying to book concert venues and focusing on the Jewish wedding bands and booking potential affairs. It was also interesting to see Avi Newmark formerly producing Dovid Gabay and now the anticipated release of Benny Friedman, has also thrown his hat into the ring with the Nagilah orchestra. It's interesting to see the dynamic shift in the Jewish wedding orchestra business. In the past no singers for the most part had their own bands, they were simply on board with the big orchestras ( i.e. Neginah). Now the orchestras still feature their own vocalist but many singers are going solo (pun intended) and are putting out their own shingle to drum up (sorry can't stop) some business. Even the One-Man-Band business has gotten more competitive with new players hitting the scene but few who are really all that good at what they do. I recently came across a new member of our community who recently opened up shop here in Texas and put up his website as LiveJewishMusic.com. Read his bio and listen to the clips . The website has a pretty extensive list of Free Jewish Sheet Music so check it out.
Enjoy!

Yaakov Shwekey makes the NY Times?

We all know Yaakov Shwekey is one of the most well known figures in Hasidic Jewish Music. Shwekey name is now plastered all over the news but not just because he's a JM music star. Shwekey got his name mentioned in connection with a serious story that has made NY Times.
The city is trying to figure out how an inmate, Tuvia Stern, a former fugitive who was facing charges that he stole $1.7 million, held the six-hour kosher-catered party in December in the gymnasium of the Manhattan Detention Complex, apparently with the knowledge of two Correction Department chiefs and the jail’s warden, city correction officials said Thursday.
Guess who the entertainment was..you guessed it Shwekey! I guess when you are making a living you don't ask who is writing the check? I guess his Rabbi said it was ok to perform for a fugitive who stole lots of money? After all it's parnasah.... Update: Life-of-Rubin brings the NY Post stating that Shwekey performed for free! That is even more bizzare as far as I'm conserned.
You think this fellow Stern should be getting anything for free after stealing 1.7million? I'm not sure this story sits well with me...sorry guys.

He's Back: Yossele Rosenblatt

New Album from Aron Razel & Rocky Zeigler: Video!

Two are better than one:

Yerachmiel ('Rocky') Zeigler & Aaron Razel sings "Shamor ve Zochor"
Two colleagues, or actually two friends, have started a new path. Each morning, the two friends study together, however, with time; Aaron Razel has discovered that his companion has composed many songs for the Shabbat. Yerachmiel Zeigler who is better known to his friends as 'Rocky' has played for Aaron a few songs ¬'Songs of the Shabbat' from the recent time, and the two have decided to take on a way towards a new album. However, as time has passed, an absolute musical fact became clear: two are better than one. 'Rocky' has brought the music, Razel composed, designed and added a few pieces of music of his own, and the duets have accumulated into a full length album. There are fifteen songs planned for the album, 'Raza De Shabbat' andin Englidh 'Secrets of the Shabboes'. As an opening to parts of the songs, the couple has added pensive thoughts regarding the songs of the Shabbat.

Yerachmiel is a young (26) and talented composer who grew up in Muncie in New York City, where he also had studied in various yeshivas. He came to Israel on his own because of his love of the land of Israel. For him, it's not his first attempt in music ¬two of his previous solo albums have received accolades. Today he performs with his band and they play Jewish rock on happy event and occasions. At the rest of the time, he accompanies the best of the Jewish music artists in Israel in singing and playing the guitar. The music is varied as well as the composition. Razel has adjusted the composition to the charming character of Yerachmiel Zeigler. Aaron Razel celebrates in these 'days a decade to his first album 'The Burning Bush

I enjoyed this song on the video and I think you will too.The album is set to be in stores soon.

I have to say I found this music video quite interesting. It's a bit strange to see a professional video that mimics a typical secular music video starring a chassidic Jew.
