Devlopers looking to buy Lower East Side landmark: Synagogue

Newsday reports on a dillema currently facing a Jewish landmark on the Lower East Side. TheBe th Hamedrash Hagodol synagogue is 154-year-old building that is currently in need of major repair in every way imaginable. Developers are foaming at the mouth at the possiblity of buying up this land which is certainly worth millions. The developers attempts to buy have fallen on deaf ear however, as the article explains:

Rabbi Mendel Greenbaum has shunned the developers, instead hoping to raise nearly $3.5 million to restore the synagogue. Developers have offered to turn the main part of the building into condos while restoring a sanctuary in the basement.

"I'll hang on until the Meshiach comes," Greenbaum says emphatical
