Pope Benedict XVI met with Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. Hier told the pope that terrorism as opposed to communism is the worlds greatest threat. He claims that the Pope is continuing to reconcile with other faiths, as did his predecessor Pope John Paul ll.
In response, Pope Benedict XVI told Hier the Catholic Church will work to further its relationship with the Jewish faith.
"After a difficult and painful history, relations between our two communities are presently taking a new, more positive, direction. We must continue to advance along the path of mutual respect and dialogue, inspired by our shared spiritual heritage and committed to an ever more effective cooperation in the service of the human family," the pope said in a written statement.
