Kosher sweets in Israel...not so sweet

BBC reports that Israeli officials have siezed shipments of kosher sweets being imported to Israel from the Gaza Strip. The reason: They were not kosher!

A large assignment of "Krembo" sweets - round biscuits topped with cream and chocolate - were accompanied by forged kosher seals and certificates.

The Chief Rabbinate, which oversees all kosher food within Israel, said Krembo biscuits are not usually imported.

Customs staff normally screen goods for signs that Palestinian militants are smuggling weapons or suicide bombers.

The biscuits bore the brand name "Sambo", and were destined for the shelves of Israeli shops before being discovered in a shipment at the Karni crossing point on the eastern edge of the Gaza Strip.

The find came days after a deal was struck between Israel and the Palestinians over the issue of Gaza's borders.
