My wife has been asking me to eat at Shang Chai, a well known Chinese restaurant in Brooklyn. I don't eat there because of the supervision which is Vaad Harabonim of Flatbush. Recently a former Rebbe of mine became engaged. I called to wish him a mazal tov. Knowing that he had been involved with the Vaad previously I asked him his opinion about this particular establishment. His response was the following:
I am familiar with this restaurant as I personally had been the overseeing mashgiach (kosher supervisor)there. I found no violations in Kashruth. However, there was a gross violation about 10 Yrs. ago. This restaurant is owned by a oriental man ( part of the reason the food tastes good) and he owns another restaurant that is not kosher. He was caught using treyf (non-kosher meat) in the kosher restaurant. All he got was a slap on the wrist and then it was business as usual. My rebbe said I can't say it's not kosher but certainly would never suggest that one eat there.
There you have it....
