Shlomo The New Musical: It's Back Again!

For those of you who missed the musical based on the life of Shlomo Carlebach you have a second chance. Word is that the show will return again this summer for a 3 week engagement from August 12th -31st. The sound track for Shlomo the New Musical, is set to be released this summer.

PBS has a video on Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach and his thoughts on the holocaust. It discusses how he wanted to bring joy to the world and rid everyone of any hate in their hearts. There were rumors of a Broadway Musical on R' Carlebach's life and they were looking at Jason Alexander to play him. The word was that Mr. Alexander had no interest and the show never really ended up on Broadway. There is a musical with a limited time engagement at the Museum of Jewish Heritage however entitled Shlomo "The New Musical". The show takes place in the 375 seat Edmond J. Safra Hall, not quite a Broadway Musical but it will feature 40 songs from Shlomo with musical arrangements by Steve Margoshes (The Who’s Tommy, Aida, Smokey Joe’s Café) and a lot of other big Broadway names are involved in this project. The one name in Shlomo the New Musical that stands out to me is Noah Solomon who is certainly a serious Carlebach music follower and a great vocalist of Soul farm fame. Not surprisingly Neshama Carlebach, R' Shlomo's daughter (and the only one with sole rights to all Shlomo's material) is co-producer of this new musical. I haven't heard from the yeshiva world regarding this production but I would imagine they are not pleased to see one of their music legends life performed this way on stage.
