AP- A hacker broke into a Homeland Security Department telephone system over the weekend and racked up about $12,000 in calls to the Middle East and Asia.The hacker made more than 400 calls on a Federal Emergency Management Agency voicemail system in Emmitsburg, Md., on Saturday and Sunday, according to FEMA spokesman Tom Olshanski.
The ironic part about this story is that FEMA, which is part of Homeland Security, issued a warning in 2003 this very vulnerability.
What's even more peculiar is that this wasn't even a high-tech job, the story claims it was a very low-tech, old school job. Evidently a "hole" was left open by the contractor of the phone system which allowed the hackers to get into the system and contact their middle eastern friends...
