The NY SUN tells us about Governor Spitzer's latest attempt to close a tax gap in NYS: Collect sales tax from the internet! Many New Yorkers who attempt to purchase from the likes of Amazon.com will be hit with an 8.375% tax! Until now the law defined taxes online only to states where the company was located (offices, brick and mortar etc.). Under Spitzer's loophole interpretation:As long as a e-tailer has an affiliate program all sales would have sales tax collected since the affiliates reside in NY. Many e-tailers may be dropping their programs for this very reason.
