It may come as a surprise but in Israel there are more than 111 outlets but most serve milk and meat together=not kosher. Only 12 are strictly kosher. In efforts to distinguish those that are Kosher, McDonald's will have their famous sign changed to a blue background with the word "kosher" added in hebrew and english.
Rabbi Lau said it is important to make a very clear difference between the kosher and the non-kosher restaurants. He said: "Blue is the sky, blue is the Talit (Jewish cloth worn by worshippers). Blue is the flag of Israel. Blue is not red. This itself is a good reason. There must be a clear difference, a sharp difference."
