Newsday reports that the NYC transit strike which went into effect ar 3 AM this morning has been frustrating commuters beyond words. The transit workers are certainly not getting much sympathy from commuters as one is quoted as saying "I read their wages in the newspaper. They make like triple what I make," he said. "It's a monopoly. There's no alternative, and they know it."
I think the TWU is being very selfish since the MTA's latest offer included annual raises of 3 percent, 4 percent and 3.5 percent; the previous proposal included 3 percent raises each year. MTA workers earn between $47,000 and $55,000 annually.
Pension issues have been a major sticking point. The MTA wants to raise the age at which new employees become eligible for full pension from 55 to 62, which the union says is unfair.
Meanwhile this transit strike is not only hurting the Transit workers who will be penalized under the Taylor law but all the business who count on the holiday shopping to keep from going under.
