Messianic Christians Infiltrate Brooklyn: Does Anyone Care?

Looking to proselytize not only the elderly Jewish Russians but also at-risk Jewish Orthodox teens, the Brooklyn Messianic Center is opening up in the heart of Flatbush.

The Jewish Week  points out:

Few leaders or members of Flatbush’s Orthodox community have taken steps to oppose the center or warn local residents about an impending missionary threat, Rabbi Miller and other activists said. Most Orthodox Jews, they said, are accustomed to seeing such Hebrew Christian groups (a term the Messianics themselves avoid using) setting up modest houses of worship and schools in Orthodox areas; Orthodox Jews in an Orthodox milieu are usually considered invulnerable to missionary ploys.

The article explains what many are doing about it:

“We basically ignore them” at our peril, said Rabbi Moshe Shulman, executive director of Judaism’s Answer, an anti-missionary group. “Until now, they have been totally unsuccessful,” bringing few Jews from traditional backgrounds into their fold, Rabbi Shulman said.
Such missionary groups have developed more sophisticated outreach methods, beyond street-corner pamphleteering and sermonizing, and now feel more confident of making inroads into the Orthodox community, Rabbi Shulman said.

It would be nice to see a bit more outrage from the Jewish community concerning the Brooklyn Messianic Center. Perhaps some people in New York could start their own center of Jews for Judaism.

Jewish Slogans: How to Market Your Neighborhood...

Well succos is underway and in Houston we had are share of real warm weather. Succos is quite early this year and even the east cost was having 85 + degree weather in their succah. This of course brought to mind a new way for neighborhoods to market themselves to potential newcomers:

Houston: It gets so humid...your in-laws will never come back.

Chicago: It's so cold....your in-laws will never come back.

Toronto: Once they get frostbite...your in-laws will never come back.

Nevada: It's hot as gehenom out here...your in-laws will never come back.

New Jersey: Once they smell it.....your in-laws will never come back.

NY: With our attitude...fugedaboudit..your in-laws will never come back.

Cleveland: They'll be so bored....your in-laws will never come back.

California: They"ll fall in while surfing...your in-laws will never come back.

Florida: Once they feel that hurricane..your in-laws will never come back.

Feel free to add you own...Chag Sameach!

Kosher News: Waldbaum's Closing in W. Hartford & More...

Here are some highlights in the Kosher news this week:

West Hartford, CT resident are nervous that their local Waldbaum's takeover by Big Y will mean the end to kosher food from this location. This will leave W.Hartford with just one kosher store to service it's Jewish community.

Monsey residents are up in arms about Pathmark's decision to close it's doors. A long standing supermarket in the lower-income district of Rockland county will leave many residents with no place to buy food without a car.

The Vaad Ho-ir of Columbus has removed it's supervision from a  Kosher caterer, Catering by Chani. The argument was over the amount of supervision necessary for the food to be deemed kosher to the standards if the Vaad. The Vaad had been enforcing stricter regulations:The Vaad wanted a supervisor on site whenever staff members at Catering by Chani were preparing food, and Capland did not agree to that, said Rabbi Howard Zack of Congregation Torat Emet, an officer of the Vaad.

Houston, TX is set to have a new pizza  restaurant opening soon and possibly a Chinese restaurant as well. We are very excited to see how these develop.

A new restaurant offering gourmet pizza has opened in Engelwood under the supervision of the R.C.B.C. called Ariel's.If you are in the area you can check them out online. You can also view the menu here.

In Washington D.C. Pita Plus suddenly closed it's doors without notice.A Halal restaurant is poised to take it's place. The Washington DC Jewish Community Center, meanwhile, is in talks with Ben Yehuda Cafe & Pizzeria in Silver Spring to open a cafe at the District facility.

If you have kosher restaurant information you would like our readers to know about let me know.

Succos Qustion: Is Yours Open to the Public?

The festival of Succos is upon us and it's time to get that succah up if you haven't already. I was recently told about a fantastic mitzvah that is seen in the chabad community in Crown Heights. There are certain individuals that make their succah available to the public when they are not using them. Evidently there is a sign (yellow I believe) that les people know that their succah is now available for public use. Some will even put food and drink for their guests. I find this to be such a spectacular mitzvah and I wonder if anyone has ever seen this anywhere else.

Why do you buy a CD?

People are motivated to buy a new CD for various reasons. Back in the day,if Yisroel Lamm was the arranger, people would buy a new album without even hearing it. Times have changed as I'm sure this poll will show.
