Swastika Handbags: New Fashion Statement?

If you are looking to boycott a company for antisemitism, Zara fashion is your man. In a move that is totally outrageous, they are selling handbags featuring swastikas. I'm actually surprised there isn't more outrage in the news about this story, only blogs seem to be discussing it for the most part. One blog claims that in India where these bags are supposedly manufactured, the swastika is actually an ancient religious symbol for Hindus and Buddhists and represents sun, strength, and good luck to many groups around the world. I guess it's not so strange that swastikas where found on a line of bed linen there? This has got to stop!

I received an email about this a couple weeks ago. Zara didn't see the swastikas in the picture they were sent before they decided to carry the bags. They have also since taken the bags out of the stores.

Why does it have to stop? First of all, the swastika is an ancient Indian symbol, as you said. Second of all, it's not even the same as the Nazi swastika, because the orientation is reversed - this one goes clockwise, while the Nazi one is counterclockwise.

Interesting point. however if you are selling them in the states and Europe where they can easily be confused it would most likely offend many people. You picked up on that difference but many would not.

some mistake! you gotto be blind not to notice it.

In today's society, yes, the swastika has a negative connotation. But the symbol did not always be associated with Nazis. In fact, they stole the image (amongst other pieces of their identity, such as "Third Reich") from others.
Here's the wikipedia page if you're still skeptical on its history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
(I am not saying that this is the best source in the world, but it does provide a sourced history of the image)

If you go check it you will find that it IS the same as Nazis. And yes anytime anyone sees this they treat it the same as they do the Confederate Flag of the South. It is just politically incorrect to have it I guess. But it IS the same as Hitlers Nazi party.....

you need to get off your ignorant asses and look for the facts concerning the swastika.

Indians own the swastika and it's about time they reclaimed it from the nazis and used it freely like it was except for the short time (20 years) that it was ripped off by a german political party.
