As Chaim points out, there has been a huge dissapointment for many fans regarding the Hasidic Reggae superstar, Matisyahu. The issue comes down to his dropping his record label, the non-profit J Dub records. Normally a breach of contract is quite normal, even expected in the music world. Along comes a big time producer ( like Sony Records) with the promise of big bucks and the artist will drop his old label like a hot potato. In most cases the old label is compensated for the blood, sweat and tears it took them to make this superstar what he/she is today. The problem is, we are talking about Matisyahu, a very public orthodox (hasidic) Jew. At the very least, one would have expected him to do the "mentchlach" thing and give J Dub some kind of notice. It certainly is not a kiddush hashem to have this issue in the press. I want to give Matisyahu the benefit (as difficult as that is) of the doubt and I am curious to see what if any response will be given to this situation.

Not to mention that Sony probably will not care as much over his the maintenance "frum image" and his own personal hashkafic guidelines like JDub would have.
Great point! Although I'm sure he'll be looking closely at the way he's marketed.
I say good luck Matisyahu on your new way ...
love your music ...
